Peter Goebel loves his copy of Peter Kalm's journal. He'll tell you it has more post-its than pages. Unfortunately, complete translations are very hard to come by today. So we decided to offer what we found interesting - edited and  annotated - to reenactors and history buffs.
Kalm was a Swedish botanist who was sent to British Colonial America by the Swedish Academy of Science to explore and write about the environment. He spent over two years exploring the Colonies and Canada, talking with people and writing down anything that struck his fancy in his journal. While most of his writings concern botany, he wrote pages of information on the everyday lives of people. These extracts, compiled and annotated by Peter Goebel, focus on these people, their ways and customs. It's a fascinating look into Coloinal America.
